Get Outdoors!

March 19, 2018
By Larry Claypool - OVO Editor , Ohio Valley Outdoors

Yes, Get Outdoors! We're offering a new initiative at Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine for our readers and friends to GET OUTDOORS! We know our hunters, fishers, hikers, trappers, campers, archers and shooters are outdoors people, but we want to spread the word for others to leave their indoor confines more often and enjoy the open air, explore our natural surroundings, parks, recreational and wildlife areas, wildlife and more.

We'd also like to connect with paddle sport lovers, boaters, bird watchers, nature lovers, all kind of shooters, photographers, artists, artifact collectors and more. Just GET OUTDOORS, and explore new things, and old things that interest you and your family. And get more kids and grandkids involved. The entire family will appreciate it.

Since we've noticed an uptick of people enjoying outside activities other than hunting and fishing, we've decided for the new year to open up our coverage of other outdoor pursuits in this region. So, expect to see more articles, photos, events, activities and advertising about camping, hiking, biking, shooting, archery, paddling, boating, birding and more this year. We'll still be your solid source for everything hunting and fishing.

At OVO we hope to get more people outdoors with our GET OUTDOORS! campaign. Find a Rock, Hide a Rock is part of that initiative. Find these rocks on Facebook at: #OVOrocks
These rocks were painted and shared by OVO Editor Larry Claypool

We'll also be stepping up our interest in Facebook's rock painting groups. The idea is to paint rocks and hide rocks as an act of random kindness and pass it on. Join us and help us spread kindness in our community. Find us, and our rocks, at: #OVOrocks. We also have a Pinterest page. If you have any questions about this topic please call our office at: 330-385-2243.

If you're new to painting rocks, just Google "rock painting groups", The Kindness Rocks Project or search on Facebook. This is done, in some variations, throughout the world.

Through the Internet and the use of hashtags (#), one can track a rock's path if each person joins the 'group' listed on the rock, posts a photograph, and uses the appropriate hashtag.

Fact Box

Find us, and our rocks, at: #OVOrocks. We also have a Pinterest page. If you have any questions about this topic please call our office at: 330-385-2243.

You can find #OVOrocks posts on the following Facebook groups: Northeast Ohio Rocks!, Terri's Lisbon Ohio Rocks, Ohio Rocks Rule, Pittsburgh Rocks and ALL OF NORTHEAST OHIO ROCKS!

For basic user guidelines about rock painting, here is a list of things you should know. These suggestions come from one of the largest groups in Ohio; Northeast Ohio Rocks!

1. Our group exists as an act of random kindness to unexpectedly brighten someone's day one rock at a time and to pass it on. That is our mission; our goal.

2. Take a walk and find a rock. Paint the rock and hide the rock!! We are painters and hiders. We are not hunters. We hope our finders join the group and become painters and hiders too!

3. Be respectful!! No rock should contain any insulting picture or language. Please do not paint rocks regarding political issues, hot topic issues or issues revolving around adult concerns. Do not paint rocks with awareness ribbons or cause logos. We are not that kind of group.

4. We support our troops and our veterans. We support our fallen service members including our law enforcement and first responders.

5. Any rock painted with obscenities, racism, or nudity will be deleted. Keep it rated "G" for everyone. Any rock not following group rules will be deleted.

6. This is for all talent levels. Try stamping designs or stickers if you aren't a painter. Remember to protect your artwork and your rock from the elements you have to seal your rock. I use a clear spray paint that says "seals" and "protects".
