"I still learn hard."

Words from a very wise man. Words that are now penned into a collection of life stories from outdoorsman and freelance writer H. "Bumper" Bauer in his new book, "The Old Man 'Whispers Heard'".

The recently released 214-page paperback book is a perfect medley of recollections, reflections and experiences of Bauer's life, family and living an outdoors life in Pennsylvania. Bauer self published the book under his label, Spinner of Tales Press, of Brookville, PA.

Bauer said he began writing the book seven years ago, with the goal, "to offer a family friendly read".

Mission accomplished. The first section of the book, "Part One" takes you through the author's younger days; lessons learned and the molding of an outdoorsman. Attaining a BB gun as a youngster - 8-years-old, in Bauer's case - is a great memory for many of us. At first Bauer could only use the Daisy Red Ryder gun at his "Grandpa's farm". He later moved onto a Mossberg Target Model .22, a gift from his parents, at age 12.

In the years leading up to his 12th birthday Bauer said his parents and grandparents told him he had earned the responsibility of owning his own rifle. He penned this of the occasion, "You could have knocked me over with a feather! I could not believe what I was hearing, but I also knew that with that rifle came responsibility; I would no longer be looked at as a child. Was I ready for this? You bet I was!"

Bauer also leads us through the memories of his first squirrel hunt, deer hunt, a new deer rifle and other youthful events that helped shape him.

For anyone who knows Bauer, or has read his articles in many local, regional and national publications over the years - including Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine - you're keenly aware of his love and dedication to dogs and hunting small game. This is well covered in the section, "Dogs and Small Game".

We all own dogs, but if you hunt small game with your best friend you will learn a few tricks from Bauer's bounty of knowledge in these pages. I also remember when his prize golden retriever, Murphy, had died and he covered that in a story about "Saying Goodbye".

Bauer also details a heartwarming account of an earlier hunting 'buddy' his grandfather introduced to his farm, a red bone beagle named Mike. He says they made a great hunting and fishing team. You'll enjoy reading about Mike's adventures.

Fifty pages of "The Old Man" are dedicated to turkey hunting. Again, Bauer is well known for his writings about the pursuit of gobblers in the Keystone State, and beyond. Turkey hunters will enjoy this section and learn a ton of tips to help call in a big gobbler.

Any dedicated PA deer hunter will enjoy Bauer's section on "Deer Hunting". His tales and tips on hunting and chasing whitetails in Penn's Woods covers 43 pages in this book. One tale, about Gizmo, will surely remind you of someone in your deer camp.

There are many more hunting stories, tips and funnies packed into this book. "The Old Man 'Whispers Heard'" is a must read, and makes a great gift for any hunter/outdoorsman.

The book sells for $14.50 (includes S&H). For more information see Bauer's website: or send a check or money order to Bauer at: 299 Jim Town Road, Brookville, Pa 15825.
