Cleaning Your Gun is as Easy as 1-2-3 with Swab-Its

Product Review

August 28, 2015
By Travis R. Hunt - OVO Pro Staff , Ohio Valley Outdoors

The Jefferson County, OH 4H Youth Shooting Sports season is underway. This is a ritual enjoyed by three of my daughters; Leia (15), Lucia (12) and Liliana (10). However, after an afternoon of blasting orange clay pigeons and peppering paper targets with .22 caliber rim fire ammunition, one ritual remained undone. That ritual was the cleaning of the firearms. After all, they need to be cleaned before the next 4H shooting event.

Historically, this task involved bringing out my box of cleaning solvents, cotton patches, jigs, rods, and brushes. However, this season was different because I was introduced to the Swab-Its Company and their three firearm cleaning products.

Swab-Its (www.bore-tips.com) is a Springfield, Massachusetts based company that developed Bore-Tips, Bore-Swabs, and Bore-Whip. These reusable, caliber-specific firearms cleaning, foam over plastic core swabs, utilize standard cleaning rod and provide tight 360 degree contact within the barrel and best of all are reusable.

This review is not a long review nor is it complicated and filled with reams of ballistic data. Conversely, this is the most concise product review that I have written to date. The reason for the conciseness is simple; the Swab-Its simply worked and the girls simply enjoyed using them.

I like Swab-Its products for three reasons: First, they screwed directly into my existing gun cleaning rod. Second, they are made for a specific size barrel and provide tight, efficient contact. Regardless if we cleaned my Remington bolt action .22 caliber, my 12 gauge Browning, or my wife's Smith and Wesson Bodyguard, there was a Swab-Its tip that fit. Finally, my wallet enjoyed the Swab-Its because I am not buying cotton patches and cleaning brushes over and over and over.

The girls liked the Swab-Its for their own reasons. These were reasons that I did not fully understand but as best as I could extrapolate, the mundane task of cleaning a firearm was now fun. I theorized that chore was now fun because they could uniformly spread oil for firearm storage or were color coded for easy identification. No, these were not the reasons, not even close. As my girls explained to me. the foam Sawb-Its reminded them of adventures in painting fingernails and applying make-up. I asked them why they would need to do this if they were not allowed to date. This comment was met with a grimace. I am serious, but have unfortunately been overruled. Therefore, if you want to turn the necessary task of cleaning your firearm into an efficient and economical experience or apply makeup to your daughters, heed my advice and consider investing in a reusable Swab-Its product.
