Blame it on the Moon

November 26, 2010 - Travis Hunt
Ok.... granted some of you have already taken a nice buck and your quest for bone is over. However, for the rest of us (including myself), our quest is ongoing. With that said I have seen bucks and passed on about nine bucks ranging from a one antler three pointer to a few decent eights. On HuntHavens Ranch, my unwritten QDM program only allows adults to harvest mature eight pointers and up. I suppose the debate over what is mature verses what is not mature is an entirely different debate. For my gang we know mature when we see it.

I am a firm believe in utilizing peak rut predictions based on moon phases. This method was created by Charles J. Alsheimer and Wayne Laroche both of who are affiliated with Deer and Deer Hunting Magazine. Besides the Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine this is the next best deer hunting publication available. According to Alsheimer the 2010 rut “will be the most radical departure from the classic rut that we will ever see.” This is so because the November 2010 full moon occurred about three weeks later than most years.

I definitely concur with Alsheimer. The buck activity on HuntHavens Ranch has been sparse and sporadic. Last year my bucks would cycle through the food plots morning and evening and roam the hills during the day. This year, has been different, the bucks seem to trickle into areas where they have historically been. Before, I blame everything on the moon, I reviewed what I am doing….. yes I am still scent free, yes my clothing is scent free, yes I am not overhunting a stand, yes the food plots and feeders are full. So with everything status quo, maybe the moon is to blame.

Greetings from the woods of Ohio, let me know what you think.
