It’s Been Fun, But We’re Done

February 22, 2019 - Larry Claypool
Note: this column ran in the February 2019 issue of the Ohio Valley Outdoor Times, the final issue that will be printed.

After 118 issues, covering just under 10 years (since May of 2009), we are signing off. Our staple publication, Ohio Valley Outdoors Magazine, will also cease operations, as of March 1, 2019. The final issue of that publication is the Spring 2019 issue, which hits newsstands in a few weeks. Our other monthly publication, Mid-Ohio Valley Outdoor Times, which we’ve published since April of 2012, will also cease operations, as of March 1.

Before I go, I’d like to thank a bunch of people, and businesses, who’ve helped make this ride exciting, interesting and possible to achieve. Firstly, I’d like to thank our staff here, graphic artist Linda McKenzie and sales consultant Tracy Bissell; and support staff in Lisbon; group publisher Tammie McIntosh, our accounting team of; Beth Bentley, Jeanne Butream and Kathleen Koch; circulation manager Heidi Grimm; circulation copy manager Kevin Fenton; The Review sales staff of Lisa Ludovici, Mary Beohm and Paula Vaughn; Lisbon production manager Mike Sweeney and the print staff and many more current and former OVO and Ogden Newspapers staffers.

Secondly, we would have never gone to print with any of our products if it were not for our loyal advertisers. Many have been with us since the beginning. Those include; Runzo’s Sport Center, Brittain Chevrolet, Glenn’s Archery and Tackle, Roger’s Mill Co., Smokey’s Deer Lures, Alpine Structures, Elkhorn Lake Hunt Club, Mullet’s Footwear, Valley Gun & Collectables, Phantom Auto Works, Kauffman Lawn Furniture, Hershberger Wildlife Taxidermy, Haine’s Marine, Berlin Boat Covers, Dave & Ed’s Auto Events, Barney & DeBrosse Attorneys at Law (The Munitions Group) and Elkrun Township Tourism Bureau. Please continue to support these businesses!

As editor, I have depended on some excellent writers to supply us with great content within these pages. Two key freelance writers, Ralph Scherder and Jeff Knapp, have been with us throughout this journey. Thank you both for offering us great content and supporting this product.

Several other writers have been key contributors also, they are: Brian Miller, Col. (Ret.) Grey D. Berrier II, Bill Waugaman, Curt Grimm, Travis Hunt, Denny Fetty and Craig Wetzel.

Dozens of people from the outdoor community — experts in their field — have helped me/us along the way to help produce this great product. Many have become great personal friends of mine. Some of those include: Curt Grimm, Bill Waugaman, Mick Brown, Grey D. Berrier II, Harry Emmerling, Doc Roberts, Craig Wetzel, Mike Mainhart, Jack Wollitz, Darl Black, John Csizmadia, L.T. Wright, Dan Large, Austin Dunlap, Jim Sutter, John ‘Doc’ & Peggy Bahnsen, Ray Ward, John Pomeroy, Tom Butch, Vince DeNiro, Dee Underwood and Blake Alma.

I’d also like to thank the departments, officers and communications personnel of the DNRs in the three states we cover; Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Specifically I’d like to acknowledge ODNR Communications Specialist Jamey Emmert of the District 3 office in Akron; ODNR Naturalist Michael Mainhart; WVDNR Public Information Officer Hoy Murphy and PA Game Commission PR Officers Jerry Feaser and Travis Lau.

There are also many ODNR officers I worked with in the field the past 11 years that I’d like to thank for their professionalism, information and dedication to the outdoors.

Lastly, I’d like to thank our readers for keeping us going, and offering encouraging comments along the way. It meant a lot to our staff, writers and me personally. Thanks again. It’s been fun! I hope to see you in the outdoors!
